Shuttle search ends
NZPA-AP Cape Canaveral The search for the remains of the space shuttle Challenger has ended. Three search ships left the ocean search area, centred about 64km north-east of Cape Canaveral, after the United States space agency determined that no other debris was essential to the investigation into the explosion that killed seven astronauts on January 29. Although the search officially ended yesterday, the agency said one or more of the three National Aeronautics and Space Administration vessels would return occasionally to the search area during training exercises to hunt for more debris.
The operation has recovered 111,132 kilogrammes of wreckage, representing 45 per cent of Challenger, its fuel-tank, booster-rockets, and cargo.
