Chirac offers talks
NZPA-Reuter Noumea French Prime Minister Mr Jacques Chirac, had offered yesterday to open talks at Noumea or in Paris with the separatist movement of New Caledonia, a separatist leader said. Jean-Marie Tjibaou, leader of the pro-inde-pendence Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (F.L.N.K.S.), said after meeting Mr Chirac that there was nothing new on the political front. “We know what the Government’s position is. What is new is that he is ready to start talks. “We still have an adversary but not an enemy. The discussion remains open,” he said. Mr Chirac held talks with the F.LN.ICS. leader shortly after he arrived for a two-day visit of New Caledonia. Mr Chirac, who has five ministers with him, also met leaders of the territory's four regional councils after a warm airport welcome by a mainly loyalist crowd.
