Resident saw fibreglass

A large piece of fibreglass which puzzled the Marine Division when it was washed on to the beach at New Brighton on Thursday has been in the area for at least two weeks.

Mr Des Niethe, a South Brighton resident, said yesterday he first saw the 4m by 1.5 m piece of fibreglass on a barricade at the end of Bellamy

Avenue. The barricade had been built to help prevent the erosion of the sand dunes. “I noticed it there two weeks ago. I just assumed it was part of the barricade,” said Mr Niethe. “I suppose now it could have been washed up there.” Mr Niethe, who often walks along the beach, said the fibreglass soon

disappeared but he noticed it at several different places as It was washed in and out by the tides. The fibreglass is painted yellow on one side, has hardwood belting through the middle, and stainless steel bolts. No fishing boats have been reported missing in the area.
