Holiday activities

This list of activities covers the first week of the August school holidays. Libraries Canterbury Public Library: Today, 11 a.m., A film, “The Sneetches,” based on the Dr Zeuss books, and other films. Sports Stadiums Pioneer Stadium: Today, 9.45 a.m. to 10.45 a.m., six to 12 years, 11 a.m. to 12 noon, from six years, clay modelling, $4 for three days. Today, 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., self defence/judo, eight to 12 years, $lO for five days, enrolment necessary. Today: 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., from seven to 13 years, day camp, $6 full day, $3 half day. 9.45 a.m. to 10.45 a.m., movies, $2 a child.

Queen Elizabeth II Park: Enrolment necessary. Today, 9 a.m. for five to eight years, 10 a.m., from eight to 12 years, pottery. $lO for three sessions. Today, 1.30 p.m. to 3 p.m., seven to 12 years, judo. $5 for three lessons. Today: 11 a.m., casual canoeing, all ages. Must be able to swim. 75 cents and pool admission. Indoor Cricket Arena: 84 Gasson Street, Sydenham. Today, 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m., from seven to nine years; 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m., from 10 to 13 years, indoor cricket, $2.50 a session, or $2 for three sessions. Community Organisations Y.M.C.A.: Holiday programmes will be held for eight to 12 year olds at eight locations throughout Christchurch. A Tiny Y programme for five to eight years will also be held during both weeks. Bring lunch, drink and swimming togs each day. Enrolment for all activities can be made at the Y.M.C.A., 12 Hereford Street. Y.M.GA. Shirley, Burwood: Meet daily at Shirley Intermediate-School at 9 a.m., or Burwood Primary School at 9.15 a.m. Today, Ten Pin Bowling, and a trip to Corsair Bay. Cost for week, $3O a child. Schools Wharenui School: Daily, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., arts and crafts, indoor and outdoors games, and faceapinting: 20 cents a child, 50 cents a family. Linwood Gospel Hall: 78 Stanmore Road, Today, 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., five to 12 years, Holiday Club programme of games, stories, crafts, admission free. Christchurch New Life Centre is holding a five Star children’s holiday programme this week at six locations throughout the city, daily from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, for five to 13 years. The free activities include, drama, handcrafts, films, Bible stories, singing, and clown entertainment. Please bring name scissors and felt pens. The six locations are: Cashmere at the Thorrington School Hall, Colombo Street; Woolston at the Phillipstown School hall, Nursery Road; Avonhead at the Westburn Presbyterian Church, Waimairi Road; Papanui, at the Papanui R.S.A. hall, corner of Halswell Road and Junction Road; Shirley Intermediate School Hall, at the corner of North Parade and New Brighton Road. Mount Cook National Park: At the Park Visitor Centre. Bring strong footwear, warm clothing and raincoats on walks. All activities are free, but donations to cover the cost of petrol would be appreciated. There is a short drive to the start of the Hooker Valley, Tasman Valley, Birch Hill and Wakefield Track walks. Assistance with transport would also be appreciated. Today, 1.15 p.m., Tour of park headquarters and weather station; 8 p.m., illustrated talk on the people, recreation and weather in the mountains. Saturday, 1.15 p.m., Wakefield Track walk, including views of Mount Sefton and the Mount Cook village. Sunday, 1.15 p.m., Steep hike up the flanks of Mt Sebastopol to the Red Tarns look-out.

Orana Park, McLeans Island Road: All ages, open daily 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Features include lion feeding at 11.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., kiwi house, white rhinos and African Plains animals. Adults $5, children $2.50, under five years free.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Hussey Road (off Gardiners Road, Harewood): Suitable all ages. Open daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Attractions include family of chimpanzees, baby animals, bags to feed animals. Adults $3.50, children $1.50, under three years free. Group concessions available.

Ferrymead Historic Park, 269 Bridle Path Road, Heathcote Valley: Open daily 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. This is an operating museum of transport and

technology, tram rides. Adults $5, children $2.50, families $l4. Catch a bus to Ferrymead by taking a no. 3G, 3H, 3J, 3K, 19M, 29M or 10N bus. Off-peak fares apply on the timetable service between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Theatres Canterbury Children’s Theatre: All ages, weekly at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays at 2 p.m., “Badjelly the Witch” at the Repertory Theatre. Cost $5. Bookings can be made at the Christchurch Town Hall. Court Theatre, Arts Centre, Worcester Street: Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m., main stage, “Rodney Rat," a musical directed by Ross Joblin, based on the book by Michelanne Forster. Tickets, $4.50. Daily at 1 p.m., free readings by Rodney Rat in the foyer of the Court Theatre.
