Okarito

Sir, _ On re-examining the beautiful photographs of Okarito that you printed in your August 8 edition I noticed (belatedly, I admit) that the accompanying text, contained two regrettable errors. In terms of pakeha history. Okarito was founded in the 1860’s, not October 1885. You acknowledge this by dating the two historic buildings still extant from the 1860 s. In terms of the history of Aotearoa and the tangata whenua, Okarito’s history is much, much older. Early European explorers record the remains of a pa there, for example. Surely it is time we pakeha stopped making these very inaccurate and monocultural errors to do with “history” — Yours, etc., FRANK MINEHAN, jun. Greymouth,

August 25, 1986. [While we do not dispute the correspondent’s argument we have been unable to confirm that there was a Maori settlement at Okarito. The European town, resulting from the finding of goid, began in 1865. — Editor.]
