Woman appointed to ‘gay’ post
PA Wellington A psychologist and author, Ms Miriam Saphira, has been appointed joint general secretary of an international lesbian and homosexual organisation at its annual conference in Copenhagen. Ms Saphira, known for her research into incest and child molestation, said the Intemationai Lesbian and Gay Association meeting focused on homophobia: fear and hatred of and discrimination against homosexuals. Recommendations from the conference ranged from pressing Governments for more effective action against the disease, A.1.D.5., providing more information on homosexuality to homosexual youth and dealing with violence against homosexuals. tc j It also covered concerns not specific to the “gay" community, such as abolition of corporal punishment, she said. News of the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Bill in its amended form was greeted during the conference with cheers and congratulations, Ms Saphira said.
