A holiday chance to do your thing

What is your favourite hobby or sport... or is there something you long to learn how to do? The Christchurch City Council’s Parks and Recreation Department offers school pupils many chances to learn and do new things these August holidays. “Recreation action” for primary school pupils includes activities at QEII Park, Pioneer Stadium, and other venues including the Peterborough Centre, and Indoor Cricket Arena at Sydenham. There are movies, drama workshops, kitemaking, arts and crafts workshops, organised games, a day camp — which includes a Bridle Path walk and a bus trip to Orana Park — a Worsley Track and nature trail walk, face painting, and indoor cricket. Face painting will be held at two malls — New Brighton and Linwood — and a dance workshop and computer course also

feature in the long list of activities. Sporting activities also include judo lessons, canoeing instruction, squash and synchronised swimming lessons. All this is available for five to 12 year olds. For secondary school pupils the list of activities is also long: selfdefence, beauty therapy, weight-training, a disco and a high school battle of the bands are added to many of the activities on the list. At the youth centre there are circus, clown, magic, crafts, and theatre workshops. There will be a local band night and also a “horror party,” to name a few of the activities. These are at 111 Worcester Street. A ski trip for beginners is also available. Full details of all the programmes can be obtained from Elizabeth Dawson, activities supervisor, at QEII Park, or from the Parks and Recreation Department.
