Council to outline Hansen Park options

Opawa residents will soon receive a leaflet in the mail about Hansen Park.

The leaflet drop wiE be made by the Christchurch City Council to appraise ratepayers of parking, traffic management, and alternative uses for the park. It is the latest step in the debate about the siting at the park of the Canterbury Softball Association’s headquarters.

The council will forward a copy of its report which will be in summary

for the leaflet, to the association and the St Martins-Opawa Neighbourhood Committee. The softballers will also receive a copy of the neighbourhood group’s management plan for the park.

A further council report will be on an alternative site for a softball headquarters, at Cuthberts Green.

The council’s parks committee chairman, Cr John Burn, gave assurances that that report would be prompt. The fate of Hansen Park de-

pended on the feasibility of Cuthberts Green for the softballers. Cr Noala Massey said Cuthberts Green was not an option. It was too sandy. Hansen Park was built to be used. The council owed the association a home ground, she said.

Her comments drew applause from softball supporters in the public seats at the meeting.

A decision on the use of the park could be made next month, Cr Bum said.
