Wheelchair buses safe
Neither of the Christchurch Transport Board’s two “Be Mobile” buses that were equipped with wheelchair hoists was involved in a fatal accident on May 21, said the board’s general manager, Mr Max Taylor. The accident occurred to a larger bus, which was standing in on the “Be Mobile” service because one of the regular buses was undergoing mainten-
ance. Neither vehicle of the type involved in the accident would return to service until the braking and suspension systems had been modified, he said.
Mr Taylor was worried that users of the regular “Be Mobile” buses might have assumed that one of these was involved in the accident or had handling problems.
