Driving award
Mr Colin Allan, of Timaru (above), with his reward for more than a million accident-free kilometres on the roads — a 25-Year Safe Driving Award. The presentation was made by the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, at a ceremony at the Beehive in Wellington yesterday. Mr Allan attributed his success to luck and to
“always watching what the other person is doing” but said better roads and improved vehicles were making driving safer all the time. He taught himself to drive on a farm tractor as a youth and is confi-
dent he will continue to avoid accidents. Mr Allan took up truck driving in general carrying, joined Caitex in 1961, and for more than 20 years delivered to service stations and outlets in South Canterbury. For the last four years,
he has delivered for farmers in the Ashburton area driving a variety of trucks from Thames Traders through to Bedfords, Leylands, and Fiats. The safe-driving scheme is sponsored by the Ministry of Transport and aims to reduce loss of life, personal injury, and damage to property by encouraging drivers to drive safely.
