Double pay for actors

PA f, Auckland Actors in a new play by the author of "Foreskin’s will be paid $5OO a week,*-twice the award rate, said the play’s direc-tor-producer, Danny Vendramini. h

“I wanted to pay the actors more because I do not think they are paid enough in New Zealand,” Mr Vendramini said yesterday. He said that because production costs for the Greg McGee play, “Whitemen,” would be high, eight private investors had put up $150,000 to stage it. “Whitemen,” a play about rugby, was the most expensive play produced in New Zealand, he said. Mr McGee wrote “Whitemen” in response to the New Zealand Rugby Union’s proposed tour of South Africa last year which was stopped by legal action.
