The day in Parliament

PA Wellington Parliament heard the recommendation of the Administrator of the Government for an appropriation of public money for a number of bills when the House sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. They were the Agricultural Pests Destruction Amendment Bill, the Environment Bill, the Noise Control Amendment Bill, the Protection of Undercover Police Officers Bill, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Amendment Bill, the Town and Country Planning Amendment Bill and the Weights and Measures Bill. Mr J. P. Anderton (Lab., Sydenham) presented the petition of Robert L. Leonard and 1200 others praying that the House recommend to the Government the demilitarisation of the United States Antarctic support force base a Christchurch Airport. Mrs Margaret Austin (Lab., Yaldhurst) presented the petition of Brian Edward Stevenson and 464 others praying for the retention of the Avonhead Post Office.

Mr W. E Birch (Nat., Franklin) presented the petition of the staff of Pukekohe North School asking for the retention of the housing rental formula negotiated between the Combined States Union and the State Services Co-ordinating Committee. A similar petition from the staff of the Takaroa Contributing School, Palmerston North, was presented by Mr T. A. (Trevor) de Cleene

(Lab., Palmerston North). Mr R. J. Northey (Lab., Eden) presented the petition of Noel John Reeves asking the House to make an address to the Governor-Gen-eral for the removal of the Ombudsman, Mr J. F. Robertson, and Chief Ombudsman, Mr L. J. Castle, from office. Mrs J. M. Keail (Lab., Horowhenua) presented the petition of Julie Cooper and 77 others asking for the consideration of comprehensive economic sanctions against South Africa.

Mr D. L. Kidd (Nat., Marlborough) presented three petitions, from the Marlborough, Pelorus and Havelock Rural Schools Groups asking the House to recommend that proposals for Increased

teacher housing rentals be set aside. The reports of the National Provident Fund, the Accident Compensation Corporation, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the Customs Department and the Government Computing Service, the Ombudsmen and the Wanganui Computer Centre Privacy Commissioner were tabled. Mr Peter Neilson (Lab., Miramar) reported back the Trade and Industry Amendment Bill (No. 2) from the Commerce and Marketing Select Committee. The Opposition lost a division on the bill, 36 votes to 46. The Dunedin City Council (Rating Relief) Empowering Bill was reported back from the Internal Affairs and Local Government Select Committee.
