Petition seeks to ban military link
PA Wellington A petition seeking to ban military involvement in the United States Naval Support Force based in Christchurch was brought to Parliament yesterday. The petition of 1255 signatures, was presented to the House by Mr J. P. Anderton . (Lab., Sydenham).
The petition Mr Robert L. Leonard and others wanted the House to re-
commend to the Government that it demilitarise the base at Christchurch Airport. This, it said, would enable entirely civilian support for Antarctic research sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation, a non-military Government agency.
The petition was referred to the Foreign Affairs and Defence Select Committee.
