‘Conserving future’ the theme

“Conserving our future” is this year’s Conservation Week theme. Designed to increase awareness of environmental planning concerning wildlife, scenic and recreational resources, a variety of displays, demonstrations, and activities have been planned throughout New Zealand from August 1 to 10.

The campaign looks at some of the ways in which an ecologically sustainable society can be achieved, and the importance of. maintaining a healthy balance between the needs of the people and available resources.

The acitlvity schedule for Christchurch:

August 1: poster display at Christchurch Town Hall, prizes presented at 5 p.m. August 2: tour of South New Brighton Estuary reserves, meet at South New Brighton jetty 1 p.m. If wet, August 9. August 4 to 8: trailer display of compost heaps and

compost making, Cathedral Square. August 4 to 8: forestry display, Linwood City. - August 4 to 15: display window Christchurch Civic Chambers. August 5 and 9: guided tour of historic buildings of Christchurch, meet behind Godley statue 10.30 a.m. and 2 p.m. August 6: conservation display, Cathedral Square. August 6: colouring competition, prize-giving at “Star” boardroom, 3.45 p.m. August 7: talk by David Norton on history, ecology and present management of Banks Peninsula forests, at 7.30 p.m., the boardroom, Christchurch Arts Centre. August 8: short story awards presentation, Rangiora High School students, school assembly 1 p.m., by Philip Temple. Also included in the week is a window display of native flora and fauna at Ballantyne’s store and Trusteebank Canterbury near the Stewart Fountain; peace displays at the Canterbury Public Library; and freshwater fisheries displays at Merivale Mall. A speech contest for intermediate school pupils will be held later in the year.
