Slow... but comfortable

TEX Starring Matt Dillon, Jim Metzler, Meg Tilly, Bill McKinney, Frances Lee McCain, Ben Johnson, Phil Brock, Emilio Estevez. Directed by Tim Hunter. Thorn EMI. 102 minutes. PG. . This movie is based on the best-selling novel by S. E. Hinton, one of the United States’ leading young adult authors. Frankly, the movie must have lost something during its adaptation from the book, because it ambles along as slowly as a Texan drawl. "Tex” is a realistic account of an adolescent’s maturation, relationships, recognition and acceptance of responsibility. The struggles and conflicts of two teen-age brothers

growing up in the Ameri-

growing up in the American south-west without parental guidance is the focus of this coming-of-age adventure. The brothers, whose mother has died several years before, are left to fend for themselves while their father is away for long periods on the rodeo circuit. An acute shortage of cash leads to rows and fisticuffs (a familiar scenario!), but the boys are down-to-earth, honest-to-goodness lads and brotherly love triumphs in the end. If you like a film that sits comfortably with your conscience and in which the better side of human nature gets star billing, you might find “Tex” to your liking — but don’t hold your breath waiting for the action.
