Cairty qualifies for final
Canterbury has . qualified for the New Zealand Division II badminton final after winning the South Island play-off tournament in Timaru during the week-end. In the final, on September 13, Canterbury will meet either North Shore or Waitemata. The winner of that contest will face Taranaki, for a place in the Slazenger Cup section of the national teams’ tournament next winter.
Having beaten Nelson, 15-1, and Canterbury 11, 11-5, in an earlier zone series, Canterbury I qualified for the final with a
15-1 win over South Canterbury, a 16-0 whitewash of Southland and a desperately close 19 games to 18 victory over Otago.
• Canterbury led, 8-6, but lost the two men’s doubles and squeezed home on a countback of individual games. The successful team was John Fletcher, Brian Williams, Mike Porter, Neil Barns, Mark Reid, Paula Thorpe, Fiona Pizzey, Liz Henson, Jenny Hood and Gill Barns.
Canterbury II beat Nelson, 11-5, South Canterbury, 10-6, and Southland, 13-3, but went down narrowly to Otago, 7-9.
