Czechs earn tennis place

Hana Mandlikova and Helena Sukova won their singles matches against Argentina’s Mercedes Paz and Gabriela Sabatini to carry the holders, Czechoslovakia, in to today’s final of the Federation Cup women’s team tennis. . Sukova, playing erratically, took three sets to beat Paz, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Mandlikova, who married secretly on Friday, beat the teenager, Sabatini, 6-2, 6-4, to secure a winning 2-0 lead Sukova, ranked seventh in the - world, made 41 unforced errors, but also aced Paz five times in her 102-minute victory after
winning only the fifth game of the first set. Sukova, aged 21, never capitalised on her height and reach advantage in the first set, but showed greatly improved form in the second and third when Paz, ranked fiftyeighth in the world, also allowed inconsistency to undermine her game on crucial points. Paz, aged 20, seemed to tire in the third set and Sukova took a commanding 4-1 lead before the young Argentine was able to fight back to 4-3.
Then, however, she lost to go 3-5 down and, serving to save the match, double-faulted three times.
