Valley triumphs in mud

PA Paeroa

Thames Valley opened its third-division rugby championship programme with a well-deserved 18-9 win over North Otago at Paeroa on Saturday, in very muddy conditions. After almost 24 hours of heavy rain, the pitch was sodden and as a result the match was played mainly in the forwards, where Valley had the upper hand.

Valley led, 10-6, at half-

time. Early in the second half this lead was opened to 14-6. North Otago’s half-back, Simon Bloomberg, and fullback, Michael Kenworthy, handled the conditions particularly well. Scores.— Thames Valley 18 (R. Turner 2, K. Wrathall tries; G. Ellis 2 penalties). North Otago 9 (M. Kenworthy 3 penalties). Half-time: 10-6.
