Bay has fast first win
PA Whakatane The Bay of Plenty rugby team won its first match in the National Mutual Championship when it beat Taranaki, 15-10, at Whakatane on Saturday. A try in the seventy-third minute to Barry Rirlnul sealed the match, which was played at a fast pace. Apart from a strong assault in the last quarter of the first half, the Taranaki forwards failed to come to terms with the Bay pack. A former Welsh B lock, Kevin Moseley, playing his debut for the Bay, was a marked man, but in spite of many attempts to shut him out he came out a clear winner. He excelled at the line-out along with Ron Rae, and his grafting in the tight was top class. Ron Preston, at first-five, had a stunning match, and Arthur Stone and Brett McKillop added further thrust to the Bay back-line. Scorers.—
Bay of Plenty 15 (B. Ririnui try; R. Preston conversion, three penalties) Taranaki 10 (G. McAlister try; K. Crowley two penalties). Half-time: 4-3 Taranaki.
