Hospice group set up

PA Wellington People caring for the terminally ill now have an organisation co-ordinating development of high standard hospice care in New Zealand.

Hospice New Zealand has as its objectives hearing information, developing special education programmes for people caring for the terminally ill, establishing standards of practice, and representing the interests of the hospice movement.

One of its first activities will be compiling a directory of available hospice services.

Mr Tim Bums, of Wellington, was elected president of Hospice New Zealand by its executive committee. He was chairman of the committee which established Hospice New Zealand, is executive officer of the New Zealand , Private Hospitals Association, and is also on the executive of the Cancer Society’s Wellington Division.

A Wellington man, Mr Max Cavit, of the Mary Potter Hospice, was made secretary-treasurer. Other committee members include Ms Marion Cooper, of Lower Hutt, and Sister Mary Teresa Scanlon, of Wellington.
