Course betting down
PA Auckland Course betting at the 45 meetings held by the Auckland Racing Club and the Avondale Jockey Club this season declined substantially, the clubs reported yesterday.
T.A.B. turnover rose sufficiently, however, for both clubs to emerge with combined betting increases.
The Auckland rise was 10.16 per cent and Avondale’s 0.76 per cent.
Turnover for the two clubs was $121,455,756. Auckland, with 29 racing days, provided nearly two-thirds of the total with $80,504,325. Avondale’s 16 days attracted $40,951,431. Course betting at A.R.C. meetings at Ellerslie, amounted to $23,987,519, a decrease of $1,089,520 - 4.34 per cent. The average turnover was $827,156, down $68,453.
The Government benefited by $10.7 million in totalisator duty with Auckland paying $7,122,949 and Avondale $3,603,078.
Attendance for the season, to the A.R.C.’s lawn enclosure alone, fell by $21,957 to $209,239, though the average betting per head rose by $6.17 to $114.64.
The Auckland club’s T.A.B. turnover was a record $56,516,806, a jump of $8,517,267, or 17.74 per cent.
The combined course and T.A.B. betting of $80,504,325, was an increase of $7,427,747. Avondale racegoers turned over $9,905,872, a drop of $1,334,648, or 11.8 per cent. The average per day was $619,117.
The attendance was 63,535, a decrease of 10,243. Again the average per head rose by $3.56 to $155.91.
The A.J.C.’s T.A.B. turnover was $31,045,559, an increase of $1,645,273 or 5.6 per cent.
The combined turnover of $40,951,431 was up $310,625.
