Strong finish from Ovett
NZPA-Reuter Paris Steve Ovett, the British former Olympic gold medallist, finished strongly to win the 1500 metres in the Paris international athletics meeting yesterday. Ovett, the Olympic 800 metres champion at the 1980 Moscow Games, hit the front as he came off the final bend and held off the challenge of the Australian, Mike Hillardt, to win in 3 min 34.505. American 800 metres specialist James Mays set the pace through to the bell, when he let Hillardt and Ovett, the former 1500 metres world recordholder, through.
Ovett pounced as they entered the final straight and maintained the impetus to thwart Hillardt’s efforts to get back on terms. Hillardt was second in 3:34.68, and the Briton, Steve Cramm, third in 3:35.50. Maricica Puica, the Rumanian Olympic 3000 metres champion, was denied the world one-mile record for the second time in a week.
After clocking four mins 18.25 s in Nice, she could manage just 4:20.89 in a largely solo effort yesterday, leaving the 4:16.71 mark of American Mary Slaney intact.
