10th International Film Festival
An exciting variety of 36 top-quality films from 14 countries will be screened at the tenth Christchurch International Film Festival, to be held at the Savoy for the two weeks beginning next Friday, August 1. Among the betterknown highlights are Akira Kurosawa’s mediaeval spectacular, “Ran”; Jean-Luc Godard’s controversial “Hail, Mary”; a witty look at race, class and caste in Greait Britain today, “My Beautiful Laundrette”; and a look at the West German BaaderMeinhof trial, “Stammheim.”
On the brighter, and bizarre side is John Sayles’s “Brother From Another Planet,” Alex Cox’s “Repo Man,” and the splatter comedy, “Re-
Animator.” Maximilian Schell gives*; his version of Marlene; Dietrich in “Marlene”; Dennis O’Rourke’s “Half Life” looks at nuclear fal-i lout in the Marshall Islands; and Vanessa* Redgrave changes sex in "Wetherby.” Full programme details will be given on this page on the next two Thursdays.
All festival films are open to the public at the admission price of $5. The beneficiary price is $2.50 and applies to senior citizens and students. A special concession price of $4.50 applies to members of the Canterbury Film Society. Advance bookings will be available at the Savoy from next Friday, July 25.
