‘Cinema in Chch
A comprehensive, and fascinating, history of the cinemas of Christchurch plus information about the New Zealand film industry is contained in a folding booklet entitled “The Cinema in Christchurch,” published by the New Zealand Film Archive.
Compiled and drawn by Mr Robert Jackson, of Christchurch, it is an updated version of a 1977 display, entitled “Film and New Zealand.” The booklet lists all Christchurch theatres, from the Royal and Opera House of 1896 up to the present day, and gives informaion on their architecture, size, seating and changes.
Other information concerns the cinema chains, censorship laws, the first screenings, the first feature (“The Story of the Kelly Gang,” 1907), long runs, sound, 3-D, wide

screen, colour and art films.
The booklet is available for $2.50 at Alice Videoland, 84a Hereford Street, Scorpio Books, cnr Hereford Street and Oxford Terrace, the University Bookshops, at Ham and the Arts Centre. It can also be obtained by writing to the New Zealand Film Archive, P.O. Box 9544, Wellington. All proceeds will go towards the preservation of film by the Film Archive.
