National again criticised
By

in Wellington The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, has become increasingly the focus of discontent by Young Nationals about the progress the National Party is making. He got a less-than-en-thusiastic endorsement from the Auckland Young Nationals in their recent newsletter (“The Press,” July 17). He has now received a letter from the Waikato
Young Nationals, dated July 17, with more specific complaints. Mr Bolger was told that at the Waikato Young Nationals committee meeting on July 12 “grave concern had been expressed about the perceived performance” of National. Delegates had felt that the National Party in Opposition was seen to be focusing on short-term issues rather than on party philosophies. “It is seen to be con-
cerned with political point-scoring and ad hoc decision-making, with a general lack of discipline of our members of Parliament,” wrote the chairman of the Waikato Young Nationals, Jan Zijderveld. A more long-term focus had to be developed. Strategy had to be based solidly on party philosophies. That approach would give National direction and consistency. If Labour actions
matched National thinking then credit should be given. “Young people, in particular, perceive the National Party to be living from day to day,” the chairman said. “That is a serious problem which should be addressed and rectified, as perception is often more important than the truth.” The chairman asked if the letter could be tabled and discussed at National’s caucus.
