Exporters at risk—Mr Gair
PA Wellington Exporters’ viability was being put at risk by the economic conditions, said the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Gair. The Government’s policies were causing serious, and in some cases irreparable, damage to the export Industries. Mr Gair cited the high value of the New Zealand dollar and a drop in export returns and volume. He told the Welllington Rotary Club that export trade figures for the first three months disclosed a “drastic deterioration” in export earnings. Earnings from manufactured exports were
down 21 per cent and from total exports down 23.7 per cent Export income was down $744 million compared with the first quarter of 1985 and export volume fell 18.9 per cent in total and 26 per cent for manufactured exports. “Exporters under this Labour Government are struggling to remain competitive — indeed (are) struggling for their very survival.” They had to contend with an over-valued dollar, high interest rates and an inflation rate two to three times that of the main trading partners, Mr Gair said.
