Queen will visit village
By
PETER O’HARA
NZPA staff correspondent Edinburgh The Queen would visit the Commonwealth Games village on August 4, said the New Zealand team manager, Mr Bruce Ullrich. She will be followed by the Prince and Princess of Wales two days later. Another Royal visit to the athletes and officials’ accommodation is scheduled for the next day when Princess Anne calls. The Royal Family will be warmly welcomed by Edinburgh, but the city is telling the British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, that it does not want her at the Games.
The Labour-dominated district council is set to adopt a resolution asking the Commonwealth Games Federation to tell Mrs Thatcher she should not take the seat that has been reserved for her. The Liberal and Social Democrat Alliance initiated the motion, which will be backed by Labour. They blame Mrs Thatcher for the boycott which has hit the Games over Britain’s policy on South Africa and say it would be ludicrous if she showed up. Demonstrations against Mrs Thatcher will be backed by the Labour Party if she does arrive in Edinburgh.
