Letter sent to ship’s agent
Blenheim reporter The Marlborough Harbour Board intends to open up a line of communication with the New Zealand agent of the Baltic Shipping Company, owner of the Mikhail Lermontov, on the future of the wreck now lying oh the seabed in Port Gore. To date all communication with the owner has been through the Ministry of Transport. The board decided at its monthly meeting yesterday that a letter be sent to the agent asking what its intentions were. Mr J. J. Webb said the
ship would be left to “quietly rot away” if the board did not take some action. “I wish it would (rot away),’’ said Mr M. R. Johnson. Mr A. D. Cambridge said he would take a “dim view” of receiving such a letter from the board if he were a director of the shipping company. The board’s secretary, Mr I. G. Nicol, said the idea behind the suggestion was to open a line of communication with the owner. Removal of the oil from the ship has been com-, pleted and the- contractors’ maintenance responsibility period of one month has expired. The prohibition on entry of vessels to Port Gore will expire at the end of this month.
