Ireland holds out for cuts

NZPA staff correspondent Brussels Ireland held out for reductions in the amount of butter New Zealand can sell in Britain during the next two years when the European Economic Community Foreign Ministers met in Brussels. No decision was taken, and the Ministers from the 12 Community countries will discuss the matter further. Four things could happen: the Irish could back down and agree to the

commission’s , proposal; the commission could back down and reduce proposed quotas byt an amount acceptable to Ireland; the Foreign Ministers could refer the question back to the Agriculture Council; or a vote could be taken and Ireland could use its veto, forcing the commission to draw up new proposals. Commission officials said that if the latter happened, the commission was most likely to resubmit the same amounts, producing a stalemate that would be broken only when one side changed its mind.
