AUSTRALIA Gold stocks steady the nervousness

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed barely steady in cautious trading, with demand among gold stock offsetting Investor nervousness ahead of this week’s release of the June CPI and the M 3 money supply figures. Heavy selling of BHP shares by Potts West saw the stock close steady on 838 c after falling to 832 on a turnover of 2.2 million shares, while Elders IXL slipped 5c to 495 with 2.6 million shares traded. On the mining boards, higher bullion prices continued to spur demand among gold issues and provided the main impetus behind an otherwise directionless market. Among the gold miners, Central Norseman rose 30c to 880, and 10c gains took Emperor to 300 and Sons of Gwalia to 485. Elsewhere, CRA rose 4c to 588 and Aberfoyle firmed 10c to 790. Industrial stocks were firmer on balance with demand among developers and entrepreneurial stocks outweighing selling pressure on insurance and banking issues. Lend Lease was up 10c to 820, General Property rose 5c to 270. Jennings gained 10c to 220 while suitor lEL lost 4c to 666. The Bell Group rose 10c to 810. Among insurance stocks Edward Lumley fell 20c to 720 and 10c losses took FAI to 676 and APA Holdings to 300. Banking stocks continued to come under pressure, with Westpac losing 7c to 448, the National Australia 6c off at 506, while the ANZ remained steady on 325. Media stocks closed firmer, mainly on the back of the steadier dollar, with the Herald and Weekly Times up 12c to 586
