Food science award to Massey professor

Professor Kelvin Scott, who retired from Massey University’s technologyy faculty last year, has been awarded the Institute of Food Science and Technology J. C. Andrews Award for eminence in food science and technology. After building a successful and substantial engineering group at DRI in the 19505, Professor Scott was appointed foundation professor of food technology in a newly established department at Massey University, where his interests, outlook and drive were to have a big impact.

He was a key force in establishing the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology,

and was elected its first president and fellow in 1965. In 1970 he became foundation professor of industrial technology, developing courses for the manufacturing industry along the same lines as those he had developed for the food industry. He went on to meet further industry needs by founding the New Zealand Organisation of Quality Assurance. The “Food Technologist” magazine described Professor Scott as the father of food technology in New Zealand and said that “it is therefore appropriate that in is retirement year he is the recipient of the 1986 J. C. Andrews Award.”
