Venice visited

Probably the most famous of the eighteenth century view painters, Canaletto, is the subject of a short lecture course at the University of Canterbury. The Department of Extension Studies is running the four lecture course on Tuesdays starting July 29. The lectures cover Canaletto’s Venice, painting in the city by Canaletto and friends, the literary and theatrical life of Venice and Vivaldi’s Venice and its music. The contributors to the course are the English lecturer Richard Corballis, Robert Erwin, reference librarian at the

university library, Jonathan Mane, a Fine Arts lecturer, and John Pattinson, a lecturer in the Department of Extension Studies. The course is intended as an introduction to the history of Canaletto, whose work will go on display at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery on August 14. The course has a $l2 fee. The exhibition will show a selection of Canaletto’s paintings and drawings as well as his series of etchings. It will run until September 25.
