Pensioners upset at rent increase
A group of residents in the Riccarton Borough Council’s Division Street pensioner cottages are upset about a recent rent increase.
The residents live in the new section of the complex, and pay $32.90 a week for a single unit (previously $24.47), compared with $28.80 paid by residents in the older units (previously $18.75). Last evening the council’s community affairs committee considered a letter of complaint from the tenants. The council’s commun-
ity affairs officer, Ms Susan Hodder, said building the new units had cost $12,500 more than the Government loan and subsidy available to the coun-
cil. The account for pensioner housing was also in deficit by $39,000, and this had to be recovered. Cr Roy Lester said he felt the tenants’ complaint was justified, and asked for a review of administration and maintenance costs on pensioner housing to see if the rents could be reduced. The committee agreed to this.
