Council funding for Summer Times
Summer Times will get Christchurch City Council funding after all. The on-again, off-again funding debate for the summer activities programme took a new twist last evening during discussion of solvent abuse and crime in Christchurch. Cr Vicki Buck successfully moved an allocation of $75,000 from car-park-ing funds to encourage Summer Times activities as a catalyst for other activities for youngsters in the city.
She cited the recommendation for positive responses and self-image through such programmes as Summer Times in the report on solvent abuse and crime. The money was available by reallocating half the planned $150,000 for the car-parking fund for the building on the Christchurch Workingmen’s Club site. The $75,000 is almost as much as the $BO,OOO Cr Buck sought to have included in the budget.
Last evening’s vote was close — 10 to eight. Some councillors advocated Summer Times as a means of occupying young minds constructively. The programme cost more than $300,000 last year, funded by the Government P.E.P. schemes. The withdrawal of those schemes meant the council either picked up the tab or dropped or reduced Summer Times.
It has opted for a reduced programme based on sponsorship rather than council funds.
