Top ice hockey wins
The two top teams in the Canterbury Ice Hockey Association's senior competition, Islanders and Bruins, consolidated their positions at the week-end with wins over the next-placed teams. They will meet each other next week-end.
In Friday’s game at the Big Apple, Islanders took an early 4-0 lead and matched goals with Rangers over the next two periods. Jeff McDonnell, Paul Scott and Gerard Bouwman each scored two goals for Islanders, but Ned Kurbatoff, with a goal in the first period and three assists, played an important role.
Rangers, held scoreless in the first period, scored once in the second and twice in the third, but never looked in charge of a scrappy game.
The league’s leading scorers, Drew Britz and Steve Fahey, both added one point to their tallies. Scorers: Islanders 7 (J. McDonnell 2, P. Scott 2, G. Bouwman 2, N. Kurbatoff), Rangers 3 (S. Fahey, C. Roberts, D. Britz). On Saturday evening, Bruins and AW A Hitachi Redwings played one of the closest games of the season. Neither team could score in the first period because of close checking and fine goal tending.
the bottom-placed Redwings, in one of its best displays, led 2-1 at the end of the second period. Midway through the third period Bruins equalised then gained the lead with a fluke goal.
A Bruins shot deflected off a defender’s stick, and looped over the head of the Redwings goal-keeper, Frank Banwell, and into the net.
Good work by the opposing goal-keeper, Francois Martel, kept Bruins ahead to the end in spite of continued pressure from Redwings. Scorers:—-Bruins 3 (J. Dowman, P. Scott, T. Witheridge), Redwings 2 (A. Berke *>'
