Beauties and beasts

The prime-time line-up this evening offers viewers a choice between the “beauties” or the "beasts.”

On One at 8 p.m. is coverage of the 1986 Miss Universe contest being held at Panama, and on Two at 8.30 p.m. is The 1986 Skellerup Young Farmer of the Year competition.

Seven of New Zealand’s top young farmers — winners of each of the regional heatscompete

for the title and a share of the $90,000 plus prize package. The programme includes a pre-film package of the highlights from the practical contest held yesterday.

“We want viewers to have some insight into the effort which goes into this segment of the competition,” says the show’s producer, Frank Torley. “Competitors have to ply their practical skills to a variety of tasks, and don’t

know from one task to the next what they will have to do. It can range from riding a horse through to mixing concrete; hanging a gate through to identifying seeds; assessing wool fibre through to pruning kiwi fruit.” Each of the finalists will be introduced with the use of pre-recorded backgrounders. T.V.N.Z. visited the farms of all seven before the event to provide viewers with complete contestant profiles.
