Burma protects treasure

NZPA-Reuter Rangoon Burma will pay top prices and offer tax-free rewards in an effort to protect national treasures from being destroyed or smuggled out of the country, Ministry of Culture officials said. The Government Archeology Department is particularly interested in antiques made of gold, silver or precious stones, as well as artistic and historic artefacts. The officials said some villagers had sold cultural treasures without realising their value to deale:rs who destroyed them to salvage gold or gems, or resell them to antique hunters who smuggled them out of the country.
