C.W.I. considers name change

PA Wellington The Federation of Country Women’s Institutes, New Zealand’s biggest women’s organisation, may no longer exist under that name after its biennial conference in Wellington, beginning today.

The first remits to be discussed seek a name change to reflect the 50 per cent urban membership of the group. ’ Delegates will consider as alternative titles: Federation of Women’s Institutes, Federation of Town and Country Women’s Institutes, or Federation of Women’s Associations.

A wide range of Issues is on the agenda — from cartoned milk and weedkillers to in-vitro fertilisation and airport fire crash services.

Concern about pornography and violent crime is evident among the remits, as well as concern about A.I.D.S. prevention. One remit seeks the installation of foot-con-trolled taps for handwashing in all public toilets in the interests of public health and safety. . Guest speakers will address the conference on crime prevention and the prevention and treatment of solvent-abuse.

The highlight of the four-day conference will be the “Woman of the Year” to be announced on Wednesday evening. The contest, open to all 23,000 members of the institute’s 850 branches, is to find the woman who best fulfils to the group’s objectives of homemaking, citizenship and cooperation.
