PA Auckland A man who fled from a road accident in which a companion died will face a charge in the District Court at Auckland today of unlawfully taking a motor-vehicle, the police said.
Wiremu Theopulus Cassidy, aged 23, of Mount Wellington, died when a truck hit a power pole in Penrose at 4 a.m. on Saturday. Two male passengers fled, but one was later arrested, the police said. A man, aged 30, died
after the car he was a passenger in rolled over on State highway 1, south of Tokoroa. The victim’s name has not been given.
The car’s driver, a Hamilton woman, aged 22, was taken to Tokoroa Hospital with moderate injuries. An ambulance spokesman said a rescue helicopter had been called to Tokoroa to transfer the man to Waikato or Auckland hospitals, but he had died before reaching Tokoroa.
