Mr Chirac replies to Auckland letter
PA Auckland The Prime Minister of France, Mr Jacques Chirac, has written to two Aucklanders assuring them of his “profound distress” over the Rainbow Warrior bombing.
Messrs Lionel Izod and Michael Smale, of Auckland, wrote to the president of Alliance Francais expressing anger about the incident in Waitemata Harbour. The letter was passed to Mr Chirac, who said he would reply personally.
Mr Chirac said he found the letter deeply touching.
“Please believe that I understand, and in large measure share, feelings of shock which you have expressed,” he said. “No-one is more profoundly distressed than I by what took place last summer.”
Mr Chirac said he would do all in his power to ensure that relations between France and New Zealand returned to “the pathway they ought never to have left”.
