Cut in wages
Sir,—When, oh when, are we going to find a politician, a leader with the courage to tell New Zealanders the truth? New Zealand, as a country, is like a family that has been living off credit cards and is at the point of billing Visa to pay Bankcard. Sooner or later the bubble bursts and we all have to accept a lower standard of living. This means that a rising costs submission is inadmissible evidence at a wage hearing. With our trading partners’ inflation figures 3 per cent or less while ours is around 10 per cent, unions and businesses should be looking to cuts in wages and/or profits, not bickering over increases. — Yours, etc.,
lAN ORCHARD. July 17, 1986.
