Fundamentalism

Sir,—From your report (July 15), it would be easy to conclude that Professor Barr, as Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford, has discovered some new meaning of the term "fundamental” as applied to evangelical Christians, and to Church history. He is quoted as saying about Chris-* tians: “It is the fundamental view that is new, the others are well established.” My dictionary defines fundamental as "pertaining to, or serving as a foundation or base, original, primary, indispensable, essential.” Correctly understood, “fundamental” is linked with the Reformation term “evangelical,” meaning “according with the teaching and

spirit of scripture as endorsed by Christ and His apostles.” It is a strange perspective that sees it as new in Church history. Perhaps the conversion, faith, commitment, and witness of the apostles is an immature and adolescent experience of historical and spiritual reality and not, after all, fundamental to the continuing spiritual vitality of the Church. — Yours, etc., M. D. FOUNTAIN. July 15, 1986.
