Promises

Sir, —With the rundown of railway workshops, it is ironic to remember that Sir Joseph Ward, in 1929, promised there would be no unemployment in Invercargill by Christmas. The local unemployed were offered jobs in the small railway workshops there and, until they were all sacked the following year, there was standing room only and most were told just to call in on pay days. Five years of misery followed but, with the first Labour Government keeping its socialist promises, New Zealand was out of that particular capitalist depression quickly, while the remainder of Western countries had to suffer until a world war got things going again.—Yours, etc. VARIAN J. WILSON. July 13, 1986.
