Aid to Afghanistan
Sir,—For the information of Bill Barry (July 10), the Soviet troops in Afghanistan have every right to be there as they were called in by the Government of Afghanistan under the treaty of friendship, co-operation and good neighbourliness signed between the two Governments on December 5, 1978. The rosily romanticised views of Mark Sadler and Bill Barry of the Mujahideen ragtag and bobtail gangs of mercenary, counter-revolutionary thugs in the pay of the United States is a pure created fiction of Western imperialistic propaganda. Mark Sadler’s rudimentary knowledge of "communist collectivism” is betrayed by his ignorance of private peasant
landownership In Poland and Afghanistan. Bill Barry expects me to add my voice to the criticism of the "Soviet dictatorship” when these columns are already glutted with too many effusions from a plethora of such ill-informed critics. — Yours, etc.,
