Aust. nurse freed

NZPA-AAP Canberra An Australian nurse sentenced to 65 lashes in Saudi Arabia after being found guilty of drinking alcohol has been released on condition that she leave the country by the end of the week, says a Foreign Affairs Department spokesman in Canberra.

Diane Elizabeth Bartram, aged 34, was arrested on July 1 at Khamis Mushat, 1600 km south of Riyadh. She bad been working in the military hospital there for the last three years. Alcoholic beverages are banned in Saudi Arabia. But smuggling, homebrewing or distilling provide alcohol to Saudis and expatriates alike. Under Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Sharia law, derived from the Koran and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, those who consume alcohol are publicly caned. ' ' - '

Western diplomats had said earlier the likelihood of a Western expatriate female being lashed was small.
