Biko film begins shooting

NZPA-AP Harare Shooting of Sir Richard Attenborough’s film about the South African "black consciousness” leader, Steve Biko, has begun in Harare, along with a search for white Zimbabweans to play South African policemen. About 200 whites were needed for policemen’s roles, said a . spokesman for Sir Richard’s Marble Arch Production Company yesterday. The film deals with events surrounding Blko’s death in police detention in 1977.

Two of the film’s stars, Kevin Kline and Penelope Wilton, were in front of the cameras for the first full day of shooting yesterday. Kline plays Donald Woods, a South African newspaper editor who befriended Biko and later fled the country. Wilton plays the editor’s wife, Wendy Woods. An American actor, Denzell Washington, has been cast as Biko. Sir Richard has said he hopes that the film will generate international outrage against the Government in South Africa.

The Zimbabwean Government has put up about 20 per cent of the film’s SUS 22 million ($41.14 million) budget
