Avon’s Lord in Melbourne

PA Wellington The top class three-year-old Avon’s Lord was flown to Melbourne on Saturday less than 24 hours after notice was given that a pallet on a flight had become available. Part owner Mrs Velma Tapper said from Matamata that it was only 10.30 am on Friday that advice of the available pallet was received. "By 9.30 the next morning he was on his way,” said Mrs Tapper. “We were pretty rushed as we had our local meeting here on Saturday.”

But to send Avon’s Lord to Australia was not a spur of the moment deci-

Mrs Tapper said her husband Hec, who trained the Avon Valley colt, had planned the trip for the horse at about the end of this month.

“Hec was just going to give him a run or two before going over,” said Mrs Tapper.

Avon’s Lord will be trained in Melbourne by Jack McGreal at Mornington.

Avon’s Lord has not raced since last November after surgery

He was down to resume racing recently but was scratched when wet tracks had not allowed the horse sufficient preparation.
