Wairio retains December date

Special correspondent Invercargill

The Wairio Jockey Club, which has succeeded in retaining its popular December date, has decided to make its next meeting the centennial fixture. The club’s scheduled centennial meeting at Ascot Park last December had to be called off because of an unsafe track and unfavourable weather conditions.

In the face of stiff opposition from the Otago Racing Club and a recommendation from the Racing Conference’s dates

sub-committee to relieve it of the December date, the club made successful representations to the Racing Authority. In a special press release, the club acknowledges the support of clubs . in Southland, owners, trainers, the news media, jockeys and business organisations who helped it to retain the December date.

“The many favourable references and supporting letters did much towards the club’s case,” the statement says. “Racing in the south is struggling enough without being knocked by the Otago Racing Club."
