Close races tipped

Close racing is expected for the annual schools teams cycling time-trial for the Litolff Cup, to be raced over 16km of the Lower Styx Brookland circuit today. Seventeen boys’ teams and four girls’ teams have entered.

St Andrew’s College and Ellesmere College will be competing for the first time.

It appears that the well balanced Christchurch Boys’ High School A team of Jason Smith, Jonathan Wilson, Tim Carswell, Damien Pain, and Brendan Richardson holds a slender edge over last year’s winning. Shirley Boys’ High School combination, which is without the services of Grant Kiesanowski, Philip Laughton,

and lan Curd. The team will be ably compensated by Marcus Hack, Paul Wilson and Jonathan Rico, who will be joining his brother Jason, and Nick Gibson. Other teams which could cause an upset are Cashmere

High School, led by the experienced Stuart Joy, and Timaru Boys' High School, which finished third last year.

In the girls' section the Burnside High School team of Lisa Gooding, Virginia Buckeridge, Christine Peddie, Claudia Hall, and Justine Chinnery should have too many guns for its closest rival, Christchurch Girls’ High School. The events will start’at 1.30 p.m.
