N. Canty beats depleted Maoris
Canterbury Maoris, without a number of key players who were called into the Town XV on the same day, fought valiantly but unsuccessfully against North Canterbury in a representative rugby match at Kaiapoi on Sunday. The strong North Canterbury pack controlled proceedings up front and points came steadily, North Canterbury winning, 31-9. In the curtain-raiser, North Canterbury colts beat the Maori B team, 27-10. • Results of matches played in the Ellesmere rugby sub-union’s senior A competition on Saturday were:—
Southbridge 13, Peninsula 0; Sheffield 27, Darfield 0; Kirwee 19, Lincoln 9; Bumham 18, Prebbleton 9. Lower grade matches were cancelled.
• The Northern A team won the regional secondary schools’ rugby tournament at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt, with victories over its Central and Southern region rivals. In a tryless first game. Northern A beat Southern, 93, and then beat Central in the final, 23-4. Central had earlier beaten Northern B, 34-3, and Southern also beat this side, 26-13, in the play-off for third.
